ROBERT ANDREW JONES, JR., 86 of Delta, PA and simply known as “Bob Jones” by all who knew him, died Saturday, February 23, 2019 at the Senator Bob Hooper Hospice House, Forest Hill, MD. Bob was the beloved husband of Gladys Irene (Taylor) Jones with whom he faithfully shared 63 years of marriage. A lifelong resident of Delta, he was born August 10, 1932 in Whiteford, MD, the oldest son of Robert Andrew Jones, Sr. and Clara Margaret (Founds) Jones.

Bob was among the first class to graduate from North Harford High School in 1951. Following graduation, he embarked upon a career with the United States Army at the Aberdeen Proving Ground. On September 3, 1955 he married Gladys who he always addressed as “sweetie”. He retired in 1987 after 36 years of dedicated service. In addition to being a civil servant, Mr. Bob turned many heads as a gentlemen’s barber for more than fifty years in the Delta, Whiteford and Dublin communities. He was even known to make house calls to cut hair for the elderly and infirmed.

Bob had several other interests including reading, especially westerns and mysteries. He was gifted with artistic talents that he used to create works of art in multiple forms. Several relatives and friends are in possession of a now treasured keepsake. Bob’s organizational activities included: Friends of the Harford County Library-Whiteford Branch, the Delta Senior Center and the Old Line Museum as well as the preservation of the Coulsontown Cottages historic district. Throughout his life, he remained steadfast and true to his faith in God and had been actively involved during the formative years of Reformation Bible Church (formerly Evangelical Methodist). Those who knew Bob best can testify to the visible devotion and love shown to his wife and family. He was a true gentleman whose attention to detail was evident in everything he touched. “A job worth doing is worth doing right” was his philosophy.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Gladys, are his daughter, Cheryl Lynn Jarvis and husband, Jay, of Gallipolis, Ohio; two grandchildren, Joshua Allen Jarvis of Two Rivers, Wisconsin and Johanna (Joee) Joy Jarvis of Gallipolis, Ohio; one sister, Patricia Nunn and husband, Robert of Rising Sun, MD; two sisters-in-law, Yong Cha Jones of Bangor, Maine and Marie Jones of Whiteford, MD; many nieces and nephews as well as innumerable friends.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters, Betty Taylor and Merna Watkins; two brothers, Laurence Jones and Franklin Jones.

Relatives and friends are welcome to call 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at the Harkins Funeral Home, 600 Main Street, Delta, PA, where the funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 28, with Dr. John McKnight of Reformation Bible Church officiating. Interment will be in the Slate Ridge Cemetery immediately following the service.

Active Pallbearers are Jay Jarvis, Joshua Jarvis, Randall Taylor, Robert Taylor, Gary Taylor and Richard Herring.

Honorary Pallbearers are Donald Jones, Robert Nunn, William Edwards, John Vickers, Robert Evans, Jeffrey Evans, Charles Karchner, Thomas McKnight and Dotson Brown.

In lieu of flowers, those who desire to remember Bob in a special way may make gifts in his memory to the Harford Christian Educational Foundation, 1736 Whiteford Road, Darlington, MD 21034 or online at or Upper Chesapeake Health Foundation, ATTN: Senator Bob Hooper House, 520 Upper Chesapeake Drive, Suite 405, Bel Air, MD 21014 or online at

We would like to express our sincere condolences to Gladys, Cheryl and family. Bob has always been a friend and we have grown even closer in recent years. We are very lucky to have had this friendship along with his artwork in different forms from pen and pencil drawings, painted rocks (it took a very gifted person to create a beautiful animal out of a rock) and other special items which we will always treasure. Bob was a very kind and caring person who never had a bad word about anyone. We enjoyed our visits very much and all of the different subjects we talked about. He was a wealth of knowledge about local history, old coins, old cars (his 1950's Ford with the loud mufflers) and old friends. We will miss Bob very much. Bob, Janet and Jeff Evans

Our deepest sympathy to Gladys Cheryl and the family. We have known the Jones family for more years than I can remember. Will always remember Gladys, Barb and AnnaMae singing in our church as a trio. Beautiful ladies sisters in Christ. Gladys taught our son in Kindergarten. Mr. Bob was our sons barber. When the oldest son got his license at 16 that was the first place we allowed him to drive was to the Dublin Barbershop to get their hair cut by Mr. Bob. Will always remember sitting in his shop with the black and white westerns on the TV and listening to his jokes. He will be missed. BTW our son that drove to the barbershop with his brother is now in his 40's. Good times that's for sure. Our prayers are with you Gladys Cheryl and family. Blessings to you all as you have good memories to hold on to. II Thess 4:16-18 Love in Him. The Olinger family

My deepest sympathies to the family of Bob. I, too, was in the first graduation class (Class of 1951) in North Harford. I didn't know that Bob worked at APG at the same time that I did. I worked with the time cards and I always wondered if that Robert Jones was the same guy I graduated with because he worked at APG and I worked at Edgewood, but I never pursued it. There are so few of us left now, out of a class of about 75. I am so glad that Bob found happiness with his family, friends and church. My maiden name was Gloria Joycelle (Joy) Hulshart.

Bob and Gladys were good friends to my folks. They remained significant to my late brother and myself. Never missed stoping by for a visit and to see our favorite barber. Mr. Bob is special in my mind. A sad time but a life well lived.
