Life Story for Mary E. Ruff

Mary E. Ruff, age 99 years of York, PA and formerly of Airville, died at 7:25 p.m. on Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at Manor Care South in York. She was the wife of the late Richard C. “Dick” Ruff who died on April 19, 1997.

Mrs. Ruff was born in Peach BottomTwp., PA on May 28, 1919, a daughter of the late Harry Milton and Mary Emeline (Morris) Fry. She attended the former Fulton Township High School from 1934-35 and graduated with honors from the former Delta High School in 1936. Along with her husband, they owned and operated Fife’s Grocery Store in Airville that closed in 1961. For 23 years, Mrs. Ruff served as the Postmaster at the Airville Post Office, that was located within Fife’s Grocery Store. She retired from the Postal Service in the early 1980’s. She and her late husband also owned and operated the former Airville Farm Service from 1961 to 1977. Mrs. Ruff was a member of the Pine Grove Presbyterian Church for over 75 years and assisted at many church social functions. She kept many people warm with her beautiful crocheted afghans and well fed with her fudge and chocolate cakes with peanut butter icing.

Mrs. Ruff is survived by her daughter, Beverly A. Crowl of Red Lion, PA; two grandchildren: V. Aaron Crowl, Jr. and Teresa J. Pomraning; six great-granddaughters: Jessica Brill, Stephanie Blakley, Kimberly Dahr, Suzann Collins, Ashley Crowl and Alicia Crowl; ten great-great-grandchildren: Dylan, Blayne, Peyton, Cody, Wyatt, Lydia, Emmeline Clare, Audrey, Bruce and Spencer. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Robert R. Ruff who died in 2016.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 8 at 11:00 a.m.at the Pine Grove Presbyterian Church, 4263 Delta Road, Airville, PA 17302. Her pastor, Reverend James B. Shuler will officiate with interment will be in the adjoining cemetery. Visitation will be at the church on Monday from 10 – 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the church c/o Amy Brenner at the above address would be appreciated.
