Life Story for Bunk Grimmel

Bunk Grimmel
CHARLES EDWIN GRIMMEL, SR., 95, known to everyone as “Bunk” of Grimmel Farms passed away in his Jarrettsville home on Monday, October 1, 2018. He was the beloved husband of Dorothy “Dixie” (Smith) Grimmel, and this past August 7th, they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

Born on April 8, 1923 in Jarrettsville, MD, he was one of three sons born to the late Charles and Ida Mae (Amrein) Grimmel and graduated from the former Jarrettsville High School. A lifetime resident of Jarrettsville, he was the third of the current six generations of Grimmels to have the love for agriculture and tend the family farm. He enjoyed working the fields as well as milking the Holstein cows until the milking herd was sold in 1987. He cherished the opportunities the farm gave him to teach his children and grandchildren the love of planting the fields, harvesting and caring for the livestock – both beef and dairy. He was a member of the Fallston Farmers Club and had been a stockholder and director for the former Jarrettsville Trucking Company that hauled milk for local farmers.

Bunk served with the Jarrettsville VFC where he had been a dedicated fire fighter for the past 76 years. He had been recognized as a Harford Living Treasure by Harford County, was a lifetime member of Jarrettsville United Methodist Church and had served on the Jarrettsville Cemetery Committee. In conclusion, Bunk was a dedicated family man, a successful farmer and volunteer fire fighter. Always with a smile on his face, Bunk was known for his kind words and sense of humor.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by:
Six children-
Dorothy L. Perri of Dallas, TX
Nancy J. Grimmel of Jarrettsville, MD
Janet C. DeHaven of Goodyear, AZ
C. Edwin Grimmel, Jr. of Jarrettsville, MD
Jean E. Grimmel of Whiteford, MD
Jane G. Hogan of Jarrettsville, MD

Seventeen grandchildren and five great granddaughters

He was preceded in death by his brothers: Walter E. and George F. Grimmel

Visitations will be held on Thursday, October 4th from 1 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the Jarrettsville VFC Fire Hall, 3825 Federal Hill Road, Jarrettsville, MD. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. in the fire hall with Reverend Terence Murphy, fire house chaplain officiating. Private family interment services will follow in Jarrettsville Cemetery.

After the funeral service, guests are invited to “The Barn at Grimmel Farms” 3859 Federal Hill Road for a time of fellowship and refreshments with the family.

In recognition of his love for farming and in lieu of flowers, his family would appreciate memorial contributions to the Grimmel Farms Youth Agricultural Fund, P.O. Box 125, Jarrettsville, MD 21084.
